UK Women's Cycle Team: Hannah Bayes
Going into her third year with Admiral Liv AWOL, Hannah Bayes has seen remarkable progress through the 2018 season, particularly on Road. Gaining experience in the OVO Energy Women’s Tour Series has been vital to her evolution as a strong crit racer and team rider.
Hannah was originally a runner, and from that sport she decided to try some duathlons and triathlons, but in 2015 she first joined a cycling club, Scarborough Paragon Cycling Club, and got a road bike. She found cycling to be her favourite discipline and so in 2017 it will be her first year of focusing primarily on cycle racing by itself. And with that she has posted some good results this summer, in particular a solid 7th place at the hilly Scarborough round of the British Cycling Youth Circuit Series, and 20th at the Junior Women’s National Championships.
In 2018, amongst many other races, Hannah has represented Admiral Liv AWOL in 5 of the OVO Energy Women’s Your Series rounds, several of the rounds of the Women’s National Series, as well as top 10 finishes in both Nocturnes. Her other cycling performance highlights from previous years include her personal record for 10 mile time trial at 22 minutes 58 seconds, Yorkshire Junior Girls best all rounder for 2016 over 10 and 25 miles and 3rd Junior at Nova Cyclo-cross race on New Years Day 2017.
Hannah loves time-trialing and hill climbs, with her favourite courses being the V718-10 mile TT course and the National Hill Climb Championships, because as she says, “It’s a great end to the season and it always has a good crowd lined up the hill.”
Looking back on the 2018 road season and ahead to next year, Hannah commented, “The 2018 season properly started for me at the Tour Series. Getting the chance to race in the Tour Series definitely secured my love for town centre crits. I started the Tour series getting lapped and finishing at the back end of race. By the last few rounds I had finished in the lead group and got a top 25. After this success I went on to ride the Women’s National Series and got 22nd at Otley and 20th place at Barnsley. Continuing on with the crits, I surprised myself again at the London and Newport Nocturnes, getting two top 10s. Next year will be a challenge as I’m currently working and studying full time towards being a qualified Veterinary Nurse but I’m looking forward to seeing what I can achieve. ”
Hannah will also have the benefit of a team training partner with Louise Scupham living close by.
